"Singing together or playing music
together has a very special meaning , as hearts
become tuned to one another. Music, especially
great music, can harmonize and balance the soul.
There is a true story of rival gang members in
Los Angeles (City of Angels), who were at odds
and had been shooting at one another. Some of
them ended up in a juvenile home together. I
this home the staff was experimenting with
creative ways of working with troubled youth.
One of the activities they were required to do
was to play recorders together! And so, they
played Mozart duets. Over time, their
differences melted away and they became friends.
We must never underestimate the deep value and
transformational qualities in the music of great
composers: Mozart, Vivaldi, Bach, Britten, and
many others, and the positive effect it can have
upon our lives!
We can feel today a
renewal is needed: a renewal in our music and a
renewal in the celebration of the festivals,
where music can play such an integral part.
People long to come together in worship and
celebration. This is particularly evident at
festival times of the year. ..."
